Water Features in Feng Shui

The Water Element

Feng Shui is about the manipulation of the five elements (Fire, Wood, Water, Earth and Metal) in order to contain and direct the good life force, also known as "chi", that can improve our lives. Water is an essential part of that equation.

The Water element in Feng Shui is associated with wealth and prosperity. It is represented by water, mirrors, free-flowing shapes, and darker colors such as black and navy blue. Photos of water work just as well as actual water, though you must be careful of the photo. A large print of Niagara Falls will crush and churn your chi, while a photo of a calm oceanscape will soothe and calm.

Bringing the Water Element to our Gardens

Bringing the water element into our gardens may seem daunting, but remember that even a small feature will reap the same benefits as a large feature. The water element inspires relaxation, inspiration and spirituality. Classic Feng Shui dictates that the most auspicious location for a water feature is at the front of the house, flowing past the front door from left to right. This promotes wealth and prosperity. However, this is not always so practical, so there are other things you can do.

Using Waterfalls, Fountains and Ponds

A waterfall in the northeast or southeast part of the garden will accomplish this nicely. Such a waterfall may be constructed from clay or stone pots, or you may have a natural stone feature in your yard that you can work with. Your waterfall should spill into a clear, deep pond, preferably filled with goldfish or carp of some kind. Happy fish bring great abundance, so keep the filtration equipment functioning normally, see that the fish do not fall prey to other animals, and make sure the surrounding plants are healthy. The edge of the pond should have a slightly raised lip to help accumulate all the good chi the water produces. Near the pond where the water is almost still is an ideal place for a meditation area.

When constructing your water feature try to use all natural materials, such as stone pots, rainwater and natural liners for the pond. Make sure the edges are free-flowing and don't be afraid to include artistic accents such as sculptures or lanterns. You may want to get a traditional Japanese shishi odoshi (also called a "deer scarer"), a water fountain made of natural bamboo.

You can even bring your outside water feature inside your home by using a mirror to reflect the outside water into the house. Similarly, make sure there is a door or window in line with the pond so that the good chi has a clear path into the house.

A Filter for Your Garden Pond

Your garden pond is a standing body of water. If left unfiltered it will inevitably accumulate dirt, get murky, grow algae and start to smell. A stagnant backyard pond is a breeding ground for fish-killing bacteria and insects. Using a pond filter will help maintain [More Garden Pond Filters]
